Jiangjunosaurus was a remarkable stegosaur that roamed the lush landscapes of what is now northwestern China during the Middle Jurassic period, approximately 161.5 million years ago. Named after the Chinese word 'jiangjun' meaning general, this dinosaur was discovered in the fossil-rich Shishugou Formation of Xinjiang Province, adding to our understanding of stegosaur diversity in Asia.
This medium-sized stegosaur measured about 7 metres in length and stood roughly 2.5 metres tall at the hip, weighing approximately 3.5 tonnes. Like other stegosaurs, Jiangjunosaurus was a quadrupedal herbivore with a distinctive double row of plates and spikes running along its back and tail. Its small head housed a tiny brain relative to its body size, but this was perfectly adequate for processing the ferns, cycads, and conifers that made up its diet.
Jiangjunosaurus lived in a warm, humid environment with abundant plant life. Its low-slung head and beak-like mouth were perfectly adapted for cropping vegetation close to the ground, whilst its powerful jaw muscles helped process tough plant material. The impressive defensive spikes on its tail, known as a thagomizer, would have provided excellent protection against predators.
