Carnotaurus was a fearsome theropod dinosaur that roamed South America during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 72 million years ago. This remarkable predator is known from a single, exceptionally well-preserved skeleton discovered in Argentina's Chubut Province in 1984, making it one of the best-understood theropods from the Southern Hemisphere.
The most striking feature of Carnotaurus was the pair of devil-like horns protruding from above its eyes, giving this theropod its distinctive 'meat-eating bull' appearance. Standing about 3 metres tall at the hip and measuring 8 metres in length, Carnotaurus was built for speed rather than brute strength. Its long, powerful legs and lightweight build suggest it was one of the fastest large predators of its time, capable of reaching speeds of up to 55 km/h whilst pursuing prey across the ancient South American landscape.
As a carnivore, Carnotaurus hunted other dinosaurs, using its speed to chase down victims. Its small arms were even more reduced than those of Tyrannosaurus rex, appearing almost vestigial. The dinosaur's skull was relatively short compared to other large theropods, and its forward-facing eyes provided excellent depth perception for tracking prey.
Carnotaurus belonged to a group of Southern Hemisphere predators that dominated the ecosystems of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana, representing a unique evolutionary lineage quite different from the more familiar northern theropods.
Carnotaurus is instantly recognisable by the pair of prominent horns above its eyes, resembling a demonic bull. It had extremely reduced arms that were even smaller than those of T. rex, and unusually long, powerful legs built for high-speed pursuit of prey.
Carnotaurus was likely an active pursuit predator, using its exceptional speed to run down prey across open terrain. Its forward-facing eyes suggest it was a visual hunter that relied on spotting and chasing victims rather than ambush tactics.
Carnotaurus has appeared in the Disney film 'Dinosaur' as the main antagonist, and features in the 'Jurassic World Evolution' video games where players can create and manage their own specimens.
Carnotaurus was first described by José Bonaparte in 1985. The original fossils were discovered at La Colonia Formation, Chubut Province, Argentina.
