Eocursor was a small, early ornithischian dinosaur that lived in what is now South Africa during the Early Jurassic period, approximately 201 million years ago. This fascinating creature represents one of the most completely known early members of the ornithischian group, providing crucial insights into the origins and early evolution of plant-eating dinosaurs that would later include famous groups like Triceratops and Stegosaurus.
Standing about 50 centimetres tall at the hip and measuring roughly 1 metre in length, Eocursor was a lightweight, agile dinosaur that walked on two legs. Its body was built for speed and manoeuvrability, with long, slender legs and a relatively small skull equipped with small, leaf-shaped teeth perfectly adapted for processing plant material. Despite being an early ornithischian, Eocursor retained some primitive features that hint at the shared ancestry between plant-eating and meat-eating dinosaurs.
As a herbivore, Eocursor likely fed on low-growing ferns, cycads, and other early Jurassic vegetation. Its small size and bipedal stance would have allowed it to move quickly between feeding spots and escape from larger predators that shared its ancient South African habitat. The well-preserved fossils found in the Upper Elliot Formation have revealed important details about its anatomy, including features of its pelvis and limbs that confirm its position as a basal ornithischian dinosaur.
Eocursor was distinguished by its small, lightweight build with long, slender legs adapted for running. It possessed small, leaf-shaped teeth characteristic of early plant-eaters and retained some primitive skeletal features that set it apart from later ornithischians.
Eocursor was likely a quick, agile dinosaur that used speed to escape predators in the Early Jurassic landscape of southern Africa. It probably lived in small groups, foraging for plants close to the ground and remaining alert for danger whilst feeding.

Eocursor was first described by Richard Butler and colleagues in 2007. The original fossils were discovered at Upper Elliot Formation, South Africa.
