Zuul was a heavily armoured ankylosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 83.6 million years ago in what is now Montana, USA. This impressive herbivorous dinosaur represents one of the most significant ankylosaur discoveries ever made, being the first complete skull and tail club found together from this group of armoured dinosaurs in North America.
Measuring around 6 metres in length and standing about 1.5 metres tall at the hip, Zuul was a formidable plant-eater covered in bony armour called osteoderms. Its most distinctive feature was its massive tail club, which could deliver devastating blows to predators. The skull was broad and flat with horn-like projections, giving it a fearsome appearance that earned it its name after the demonic creature from the film Ghostbusters.
As a herbivore, Zuul used its small teeth and powerful jaw muscles to process tough plant material including ferns, cycads, and early flowering plants. Its low-slung body and wide stance made it perfectly adapted for browsing on low-growing vegetation whilst remaining stable and well-defended against predators.
What makes Zuul particularly special is the exceptional preservation of its fossils, which included not only bones but also preserved skin, keratin sheaths, and the arrangement of its body armour exactly as it was in life. This remarkable preservation has provided scientists with unprecedented insights into how these ancient armoured giants actually looked and lived.
Zuul had a broad, flat skull with prominent horn-like spikes projecting from the back, giving it a demonic appearance. Its most notable feature was a massive, heavy tail club used for defence, whilst its entire body was covered in rows of bony armour plates and spikes.
Zuul likely lived in small herds and used its powerful tail club as a defensive weapon, swinging it at the legs of attacking predators to cause serious injury. When threatened, it probably crouched down to protect its vulnerable underside whilst presenting its heavily armoured back and dangerous tail to enemies.
Zuul was deliberately named after the demonic creature Zuul from the 1984 film Ghostbusters, due to its fearsome skull horns and overall menacing appearance.
Zuul was first described by Victoria Arbour and David Evans in 2017. The original fossils were discovered at Judith River Formation, Montana, USA.
