Yizhousaurus was a remarkable early sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Early Jurassic period, approximately 200 million years ago, in what is now southern China. This primitive long-necked giant represents one of the most important discoveries in our understanding of sauropod evolution, as it preserves the most complete skeleton of any basal sauropod known to science, including an intact skull.
Living in the lush, warm environments of the Lufeng Formation in Yunnan Province, Yizhousaurus was considerably smaller than its later sauropod relatives, measuring about 7 metres in length and standing roughly 2 metres tall at the hip. Despite its relatively modest size, it already displayed the classic sauropod body plan with a long neck, small head, barrel-shaped body, and long tail. Its four sturdy legs supported its estimated 2-tonne weight as it moved through the Early Jurassic landscape.
As a herbivore, Yizhousaurus would have fed on the abundant plant life of its time, including ferns, cycads, and early conifers. Its long neck allowed it to reach vegetation at various heights, though it likely couldn't stretch as high as later sauropods. The discovery of this dinosaur has provided scientists with crucial insights into how the massive sauropods we know from later periods evolved from smaller, more primitive ancestors.
The exceptionally preserved skeleton, discovered in the fossil-rich Lufeng Formation, has made Yizhousaurus a cornerstone species for understanding early sauropod anatomy and evolution, bridging the gap between earlier sauropodomorphs and the giant sauropods that would dominate later Jurassic landscapes.
Yizhousaurus possessed a relatively short neck compared to later sauropods, with a small, complete skull that shows primitive features. Its limb bones were robust but not as columnar as those of giant sauropods, and it retained some characteristics that linked it to earlier, smaller sauropodomorphs.
Yizhousaurus likely lived in herds and spent most of its time foraging for plant material at low to medium heights. As a basal sauropod, it may have been capable of occasional bipedal feeding, rearing up on its hind legs to reach higher vegetation when necessary.
Yizhousaurus was first described by Sankar Chatterjee and colleagues in 2018. The original fossils were discovered at Lufeng Formation, Yunnan Province, China.
