Trachodon is one of palaeontology's most problematic dinosaurs, representing an early chapter in the study of duck-billed ornithopods. First described in 1856 by Joseph Leidy based on teeth discovered in Montana's Judith River Formation, this genus has become what scientists call a 'nomen dubium' - a name based on insufficient evidence to be scientifically reliable.
The original fossil material consisted of several teeth collected by Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden during an expedition along the Missouri River. Unfortunately, these teeth were later discovered to be a mixture from different types of dinosaurs - some belonging to ornithopods and others to ceratopsians. Only one incomplete hadrosaurid tooth is now considered the valid holotype specimen.
If Trachodon were a valid genus, it would have been a plant-eating ornithopod living in what is now Montana during the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous, approximately 79 to 75 million years ago. Like other members of its family, it would likely have been a large, duck-billed dinosaur capable of both bipedal and quadrupedal locomotion, using its specialised teeth to process tough plant material.
The problematic nature of Trachodon highlights the challenges faced by early palaeontologists working with fragmentary remains. Many species once assigned to this genus have since been reclassified or recognised as belonging to better-established ornithopod genera, making Trachodon a cautionary tale in dinosaur taxonomy.
Based on the single valid tooth, Trachodon would have had the characteristic leaf-shaped, ridged teeth typical of hadrosaurid ornithopods. However, the fragmentary nature of the remains makes any distinctive features impossible to determine reliably.
Due to the extremely limited fossil evidence, no specific behaviours can be confidently attributed to Trachodon. If it were a typical hadrosaurid ornithopod, it would likely have been a social herbivore that moved in herds across Late Cretaceous floodplains.
