Thotobolosaurus was an early sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Early Jurassic period in what is now Lesotho, southern Africa. This name is now considered a synonym of Kholumolumo ellenbergerorum, which was formally described in 2020. The dinosaur represents an important transitional form between the earlier bipedal prosauropods and the massive four-legged sauropods that would dominate later periods.
As a massopodan sauropodomorph, this dinosaur was closely related to Sarahsaurus and represents the early evolution of the long-necked giants. It would have measured approximately 6 metres in length and stood about 2 metres high at the hip, making it a medium-sized member of the early sauropod family. Unlike its gigantic descendants, this early sauropod retained many primitive features whilst developing the characteristic long neck and plant-eating adaptations.
The dinosaur inhabited the semi-arid landscapes of the Early Jurassic Elliot Formation, feeding on the available vegetation including ferns, cycads, and early conifers. Its discovery has provided valuable insights into the early radiation of sauropodomorph dinosaurs in the southern supercontinent of Gondwana, particularly in the African region that would later separate into modern southern Africa.
What made Thotobolosaurus distinctive?
Thotobolosaurus possessed the characteristic long neck of early sauropods, though not as extremely elongated as later forms. It had a relatively small head compared to its body size and four sturdy legs adapted for supporting its weight whilst browsing on vegetation.
Behaviour
As an early sauropod, Thotobolosaurus likely spent most of its time foraging for plants, using its long neck to reach vegetation at various heights. It probably lived in small herds and may have been capable of rearing up on its hind legs to reach higher branches, a behaviour retained from its bipedal ancestors.
Discovery
Thotobolosaurus was first described by Paul Ellenberger and colleagues in 2020. The original fossils were discovered at Elliot Formation, Maphutseng, Lesotho.
Thotobolosaurus FAQ
What did Thotobolosaurus eat?
Thotobolosaurus was a herbivore that fed on the plants available during the
Early Jurassic period, including ferns, cycads, and early conifers. It used its long neck to browse vegetation at different heights, from ground level to the tops of trees.
How big was Thotobolosaurus?
Thotobolosaurus was approximately 6 metres long and stood about 2 metres high at the hip, weighing an estimated 1.5 tonnes. This made it a medium-sized early sauropod, much smaller than the giants that would evolve later.
When did Thotobolosaurus live?
Thotobolosaurus lived during the
Early Jurassic period, approximately 201 to 190 million years ago. This was a crucial time in dinosaur evolution when sauropods were beginning to diversify and grow larger.
Where was Thotobolosaurus found?
Thotobolosaurus fossils were discovered in the Elliot Formation at Maphutseng in Lesotho, a small landlocked country in southern Africa. This makes it one of the few dinosaurs known from Lesotho.
How do you pronounce Thotobolosaurus?
Thotobolosaurus is pronounced 'tho-TOH-bo-low-SORE-us', though it should be noted that this name is now considered a synonym of Kholumolumo ellenbergerorum.
What does Thotobolosaurus mean?
The meaning of the name Thotobolosaurus was not formally established before the dinosaur was reclassified as Kholumolumo ellenbergerorum, which honours the Ellenberger family who contributed significantly to southern African palaeontology.
How fast could Thotobolosaurus run?
The running speed of Thotobolosaurus is unknown, but as a four-legged herbivore it was likely not built for speed. Early sauropods probably moved at a steady walking pace, conserving energy for their plant-eating lifestyle.
What type of dinosaur was Thotobolosaurus?
Thotobolosaurus was an early sauropod dinosaur belonging to the family Massospondylidae. It was a massopodan sauropodomorph, representing an important evolutionary step towards the giant long-necked sauropods.
Was Thotobolosaurus related to birds?
Like all dinosaurs, Thotobolosaurus was distantly related to birds, but as a sauropod it belonged to a different major group (Sauropodomorpha) than the theropods that gave rise to modern birds. The relationship is quite distant in the dinosaur family tree.
How many Thotobolosaurus fossils have been found?
The exact number of Thotobolosaurus fossils is not well documented in available sources, but the remains were sufficient for scientists to formally describe the species as Kholumolumo ellenbergerorum in 2020 and establish its relationships to other early sauropods.
