Syngonosaurus was a medium-sized ornithopod dinosaur that roamed the landscapes of Early Cretaceous England between 145 and 100 million years ago. This fascinating creature was first discovered in the famous Cambridge Greensand formation and described by British palaeontologist Harry Seeley in 1879, making it one of the earlier dinosaur discoveries in Britain.
As an ornithopod, Syngonosaurus was a plant-eating dinosaur that likely moved on both two and four legs, depending on whether it was feeding or travelling. It measured approximately 6 metres in length and stood about 2 metres tall at the hip, weighing roughly 1.5 tonnes. The dinosaur possessed the typical ornithopod features of a duck-like beak for cropping vegetation and rows of grinding teeth perfect for processing tough plant material.
Syngonosaurus lived during a time when England enjoyed a much warmer, subtropical climate with lush vegetation. It would have fed on a variety of plants including ferns, cycads, and early flowering plants that were beginning to appear during this period. The dinosaur's classification has been quite a journey - initially it was grouped with the armoured dinosaur Acanthopholis, but modern research conducted in 2020 revealed its true identity as a basal iguanodontian ornithopod.
The Cambridge Greensand where Syngonosaurus was discovered represents ancient marine deposits, suggesting that its remains were washed out to sea after death, providing us with a precious glimpse into Early Cretaceous terrestrial life in what is now southern England.
Syngonosaurus possessed the characteristic duck-like beak of ornithopod dinosaurs and rows of grinding teeth adapted for processing plant material. As a basal iguanodontian, it would have had the typical robust build of early ornithopods with powerful hind limbs for both bipedal locomotion and support when feeding on all fours.
Syngonosaurus likely spent much of its time foraging for vegetation, using its beak to crop plants and its grinding teeth to process tough plant material. As an ornithopod, it could probably switch between moving on two legs when travelling and dropping to all fours when feeding on low-growing plants.
