Kunbarrasaurus was a small, heavily armoured ankylosaur that roamed the ancient landscapes of Australia during the Early Cretaceous period, around 106 million years ago. This dinosaur represents one of the most complete ankylosaur specimens ever discovered in Australia, providing valuable insights into the armoured dinosaurs that once inhabited the southern continent.
Measuring approximately 2.5 metres in length and standing about 80 centimetres tall at the hip, Kunbarrasaurus was considerably smaller than many of its northern hemisphere relatives. Despite its modest size, this ankylosaur was well-protected by bony armour plates called osteoderms that covered its back, sides, and tail. These defensive features would have provided excellent protection against the predators of its time.
As a herbivore, Kunbarrasaurus possessed a beak-like mouth perfect for cropping vegetation, along with small teeth suited for processing plant material. It likely fed on ferns, cycads, and early flowering plants that grew in the warm, humid climate of Cretaceous Australia. The dinosaur's low-slung body and wide stance suggest it was a ground-level browser, carefully selecting the most nutritious plant parts.
The discovery of Kunbarrasaurus has significantly enhanced our understanding of ankylosaur evolution and distribution, demonstrating that these armoured dinosaurs had successfully colonised Australia by the Early Cretaceous period and had evolved their own unique characteristics in isolation from their northern cousins.
Kunbarrasaurus was distinguished by its comprehensive bony armour plating covering its back and sides, a relatively small size compared to other ankylosaurs, and unique Australian adaptations including a distinctively shaped skull. Its armour consisted of small, closely-packed osteoderms that formed an almost impenetrable defensive shell.
Kunbarrasaurus likely lived a relatively peaceful existence as a low-level browser, using its beak to crop vegetation close to the ground. When threatened, it would have relied on its heavy armour plating for protection, possibly crouching down to protect its vulnerable underside whilst presenting an impenetrable armoured surface to predators.
Kunbarrasaurus was first described by Lucy Leahey in 2015. The original fossils were discovered at Allaru Mudstone, Queensland, Australia.
