Hecatasaurus was a small ornithopod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, between 83.6 and 72.2 million years ago. This herbivorous dinosaur inhabited what is now Romania, making it one of the notable European dinosaurs from this time period. At approximately 5 metres in length and weighing around 600 kilograms, Hecatasaurus was relatively modest in size compared to many of its contemporaries.
As an ornithopod, Hecatasaurus belonged to a successful group of plant-eating dinosaurs characterised by their bird-like hip structure and ability to move on both two and four legs. These dinosaurs were well-adapted for processing plant material, with specialised teeth and jaws designed for grinding tough vegetation. Hecatasaurus likely fed on ferns, cycads, and early flowering plants that were becoming more common during the Late Cretaceous.
The discovery of Hecatasaurus in Romania provides valuable insights into the diversity of European dinosaur fauna during the Late Cretaceous. At this time, Europe consisted of a series of islands, and the relatively small size of Hecatasaurus may reflect adaptation to island environments where resources were more limited than on larger landmasses.
Like other ornithopods, Hecatasaurus was probably a social animal that lived in herds for protection against predators. Its bipedal locomotion would have allowed it to move quickly when threatened, whilst its smaller size made it agile and able to navigate through dense vegetation in search of food.
Hecatasaurus was distinguished by its moderate size for an ornithopod and robust build typical of the Telmatosauridae family. Its teeth were specifically adapted for processing tough plant material, with features that allowed efficient grinding of vegetation.
Hecatasaurus likely lived in small herds and was capable of both bipedal and quadrupedal locomotion, switching between gaits depending on feeding behaviour and the need for speed. As a herbivore, it would have spent much of its time foraging for suitable vegetation in the forests and open areas of Late Cretaceous Romania.
The original fossils were discovered at Romania.
