Gryponyx was an early sauropod dinosaur that lived during the very end of the Triassic period, around 201 million years ago, in what is now South Africa. This plant-eating dinosaur represents an important transitional form in the evolution of the massive long-necked giants that would dominate the Jurassic period.
At approximately 8 metres long and weighing around 3 tonnes, Gryponyx was considerably smaller than its famous descendants like Brontosaurus, but still impressive by today's standards. It possessed the characteristic long neck and tail of sauropods, though these features were not as extremely developed as in later species. Its body was supported by four sturdy legs, and it moved about on all fours whilst browsing on the vegetation of ancient Gondwana.
The discovery of Gryponyx has provided valuable insights into how sauropods evolved from their smaller, bipedal ancestors.
