Eousdryosaurus was a small ornithopod dinosaur that lived approximately 152 million years ago during the Late Jurassic period in what is now Portugal. This herbivorous dinosaur represents one of the earliest members of the iguanodontian group, making it particularly important for understanding the evolution of these plant-eating dinosaurs.
Measuring around 2.5 metres in length and standing about 1 metre tall at the hip, Eousdryosaurus was a relatively small ornithopod that would have weighed roughly 25 kilograms. Like other members of its family, it was primarily bipedal, capable of running on its hind legs when necessary, though it may have also moved on all fours whilst feeding on low-growing vegetation.
As a herbivore, Eousdryosaurus possessed teeth well-adapted for processing plant material. Its jaw structure suggests it could efficiently crop and chew the ferns, cycads, and conifers that dominated the Late Jurassic landscape of Portugal. The dinosaur's relatively long legs indicate it was likely a swift runner, an important adaptation for escaping the numerous predators of its time.
The discovery of Eousdryosaurus has provided valuable insights into the diversity of European dinosaur fauna during the Late Jurassic period, demonstrating that Portugal was home to a rich ecosystem of both large and small dinosaur species.
Eousdryosaurus was distinguished by its small size and primitive iguanodontian features. The species name 'nanohallucis' refers to its particularly small first toe, which was a distinctive characteristic of this dinosaur.
Eousdryosaurus likely lived in small herds or family groups, feeding on low-growing vegetation during the day. Its long legs suggest it was an active dinosaur capable of quick bursts of speed to escape predators that shared its Late Jurassic Portuguese habitat.

Eousdryosaurus was first described by Octávio Mateus and colleagues in 2014. The original fossils were discovered at Upper Jurassic rocks, western Portugal.
