Elrhazosaurus was a small ornithopod dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 121 million years ago, in what is now Niger, Africa. This dinosaur represents an important piece of the evolutionary puzzle for understanding early iguanodontian dinosaurs, though it is known only from isolated bones found in the El Rhaz Formation.
As a basal iguanodontian, Elrhazosaurus would have been a bipedal herbivore, likely standing about 1 metre tall at the hip and measuring around 3 metres in total length. Its build was probably similar to other small ornithopods of its time, with strong hind legs for running and smaller front limbs that could be used for walking on all fours when feeding or moving slowly.
The fossils of Elrhazosaurus were initially misidentified as belonging to Valdosaurus, another dryosaurid dinosaur. However, careful study of the bone fragments revealed enough differences to establish Elrhazosaurus as its own distinct genus. This reclassification highlights the ongoing detective work palaeontologists must do when working with fragmentary remains.
As a herbivore, Elrhazosaurus would have fed on the ferns, cycads, and early flowering plants that grew in the warm, humid climate of Cretaceous Africa. Its teeth and jaw structure would have been adapted for processing tough plant material, typical of ornithopod dinosaurs of this period.
Elrhazosaurus is distinguished from related dryosaurids by specific features in its isolated bone fragments, including subtle differences in bone structure that separate it from Valdosaurus. The fragmentary nature of the fossils makes detailed physical descriptions challenging.
As a small ornithopod, Elrhazosaurus likely lived in herds for protection from predators and would have been capable of rapid bipedal locomotion when threatened. It probably spent much of its time foraging for vegetation close to the ground, using its hands to manipulate plant material.
