Bannykus was a small theropod dinosaur that lived approximately 121 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous period in what is now Inner Mongolia, China. This tiny dinosaur belonged to a specialised group called alvarezsauroids, which were highly unusual theropods that evolved distinctive adaptations for a very specific lifestyle.
Measuring about 80 centimetres long and standing roughly 30 centimetres tall at the hip, Bannykus was roughly the size of a small dog. What made this theropod truly remarkable were its powerful, clawed forelimbs and robust arm muscles. Unlike most theropods that used their arms for grasping prey, Bannykus appears to have been adapted for digging and breaking into structures, likely termite mounds and ant colonies.
As a carnivore, Bannykus probably fed primarily on insects, particularly social insects like ants and termites. Its strong arms and claws would have been perfect tools for tearing apart tough insect nests to reach the protein-rich larvae and adults inside. This specialised feeding behaviour made alvarezsauroids like Bannykus the prehistoric equivalent of modern anteaters.
Bannykus represents an important evolutionary stage in alvarezsauroid development, showing how these theropods gradually became more specialised for their unusual ecological niche. Its discovery has helped scientists better understand how this remarkable group of dinosaurs evolved their distinctive body plan and feeding strategies.
Bannykus had unusually robust and powerful forelimbs with strong claws, adapted for digging and breaking into insect nests. Its small size and stocky build distinguished it from other theropods of its time.
Bannykus likely spent much of its time searching for and breaking into termite mounds and ant colonies using its powerful clawed arms. It probably lived a largely solitary lifestyle, methodically hunting for insect colonies across the Early Cretaceous landscapes of ancient China.
Bannykus was first described by Xu Xing and colleagues in 2018. The original fossils were discovered at Bayin-Gobi Formation, Inner Mongolia, China.
