Atsinganosaurus was a massive long-necked sauropod dinosaur that roamed the ancient landscapes of what is now southern France during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 83.6 million years ago. This impressive herbivore belonged to the titanosaurian group of sauropods, which were among the last and most diverse of the giant long-necked dinosaurs to walk the Earth.
Measuring around 12 metres in length and standing about 4 metres tall at the hip, Atsinganosaurus was a substantial creature that would have dominated its prehistoric environment. Like other sauropods, it possessed the characteristic extremely long neck and tail, massive body, and four pillar-like legs that supported its considerable weight of approximately 8 tonnes. Its elongated neck allowed it to reach high into the canopy to browse on conifers, ferns, and other vegetation that shorter dinosaurs couldn't access.
The well-preserved fossil remains of Atsinganosaurus were discovered in the Grès à Reptiles Formation near Aix-en-Provence, providing scientists with valuable insights into the diversity of European titanosaurs. As a herbivore, this sauropod would have spent most of its day feeding, using its small head and peg-like teeth to strip leaves and soft plant material, which were then processed in its enormous digestive system.
Atsinganosaurus lived during a time when sea levels were high and much of Europe consisted of islands and coastal plains, creating a warm, humid climate perfect for lush vegetation that could sustain such large herbivorous dinosaurs.
Atsinganosaurus possessed the typical titanosaur body plan with a relatively small head, extremely long neck, massive barrel-shaped body, and lengthy tail. Its robust limb bones and vertebrae show adaptations for supporting considerable body weight, while maintaining the elegant proportions characteristic of advanced sauropods.
Like other sauropods, Atsinganosaurus likely lived in herds for protection against predators, migrating seasonally to find fresh vegetation. It would have spent 16-18 hours daily feeding to sustain its massive body, using its long neck to browse vegetation at various heights without moving its body frequently.
