Atrociraptor was a fierce theropod dinosaur that prowled the ancient forests of Alberta, Canada, during the Late Cretaceous period, between 83.6 and 72.2 million years ago. This relatively small but formidable predator belonged to the raptor family, sharing many characteristics with its more famous relatives like Velociraptor and Deinonychus.
Standing about 60 centimetres tall at the hip and measuring roughly 2 metres in length, Atrociraptor was built for speed and agility. Like other theropods in its group, it possessed a large, sickle-shaped claw on each foot, which it likely used to slash at prey. Its skull shows robust features, suggesting it had a powerful bite compared to other raptors of similar size.
As a carnivore, Atrociraptor would have hunted smaller dinosaurs, early mammals, and other vertebrates in its ecosystem. Its sharp, serrated teeth were perfectly designed for slicing through flesh, whilst its lightweight build and long legs suggest it was an active pursuit predator. The dinosaur's name, meaning 'savage robber', reflects its predatory lifestyle.
What makes Atrociraptor particularly interesting is that it lived towards the very end of the dinosaur age, making it one of the last raptors to exist before the great extinction event that ended the Cretaceous period.
Atrociraptor had a notably robust skull compared to other raptors of similar size, suggesting a more powerful bite. It possessed the characteristic large, curved killing claw on each foot, and its teeth were particularly sharp and well-suited for slicing meat.
Atrociraptor was likely an active hunter that used its speed and agility to pursue prey through dense vegetation. Like other raptors, it probably used its large foot claws to slash and pin down victims whilst using its powerful jaws to deliver fatal bites.
Atrociraptor gained significant attention after appearing as an antagonist in the 2022 film Jurassic World Dominion, though the movie version was considerably larger than the real dinosaur.
