Anatotitan was a massive ornithopod dinosaur that lived during the final stages of the Cretaceous period, approximately 72 to 66 million years ago. This giant herbivore roamed the river plains and coastal lowlands of what is now western North America, particularly in areas that would become South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. As one of the largest duck-billed dinosaurs ever discovered, Anatotitan was truly impressive in scale.
This ornithopod possessed the characteristic flat, duck-like bill that gave hadrosaurs their common name. Unlike some of its crested relatives, Anatotitan had a relatively flat head without elaborate cranial ornamentation. Its powerful jaws contained hundreds of closely packed teeth arranged in dental batteries, perfectly designed for grinding tough plant material. The creature could move both on two legs when speed was needed and on all fours whilst feeding on low-growing vegetation.
Anatotitan's diet consisted entirely of plants, including ferns, conifers, and flowering plants that were becoming increasingly common during the Late Cretaceous. Its sophisticated chewing mechanism allowed it to process even the toughest plant fibres efficiently. The dinosaur's large size would have provided protection from most predators, though it shared its environment with fearsome hunters like Tyrannosaurus rex.
Today, many scientists consider Anatotitan to be the same species as Edmontosaurus annectens, representing one of the last great dinosaur species before the mass extinction event that ended the Mesozoic Era.
Anatotitan was characterised by its enormous size, flat duck-like bill, and lack of cranial crests. Its head was proportionally long and low, with a distinctive downward curve at the front of the snout, giving it an almost pelican-like profile.
Anatotitan likely lived in herds for protection and may have migrated seasonally in search of fresh vegetation. Evidence suggests these ornithopods could rear up on their hind legs to reach higher browse or to spot potential threats across the landscape.
Anatotitan has appeared in various dinosaur documentaries and educational programmes, often featured as one of the last great herbivores of the Cretaceous period.
